Fujifilm X100VI

The Fujifilm X100VI is the camera that became a TikTok accessory and sold out worldwide for twelve months. Beneath the influencer hype, it’s a genuinely excellent 40MP APS-C compact with a fixed 23mm f/2 lens, in-body stabilization, and a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder. At $1,599 MSRP — and $2,200+ street during the shortage — it’s the most wanted camera of the decade. The question is whether it deserves it.

The sensor and processor

The X100VI debuts the 40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor (backside-illuminated) and the X-Processor 5. That’s the same imaging stack as the X-T5. Resolution is a real jump from the X100V’s 26MP — useful for cropping into the 23mm focal length. The processor brings subject-detection autofocus (animals, birds, vehicles, humans) that actually works, plus film simulation updates.

Dynamic range and high-ISO performance are excellent for APS-C. ISO 6400 is clean; ISO 12,800 is usable with light noise reduction.

The lens

Fixed Fujinon 23mm f/2 (35mm-equivalent field of view). It’s sharp edge-to-edge by f/2.8, with mild softness wide-open in the corners — a characterful flaw, not a defect. The leaf shutter is silent (great for street and quiet environments) and syncs with flash at all shutter speeds. A built-in 4-stop ND filter lets you shoot f/2 in daylight. The lens doesn’t zoom. You will love it or sell the camera.

In-body stabilization

The big new feature over the X100V: 5-axis IBIS rated to 6 stops. Hand-hold at 1/4s in decent light. This matters more than it sounds — it transforms low-light street and interiors shooting. The X100V demanded higher ISOs in the same situations.

The viewfinder

The hybrid OVF/EVF is the X100 series’ signature. Flip a lever and you switch between a true optical viewfinder (with an electronic overlay for framing and exposure info) and a full 3.69M-dot OLED EVF. No other camera does this. For street photographers who prefer the “real world” framing of an optical finder, it’s unmatched.

Film simulations

20 film simulations including the new “Reala Ace.” These are JPEG profiles that emulate classic Fujifilm stocks (Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome, Eterna, Nostalgic Neg). Many shooters deliver JPEGs straight from camera. The Custom Settings community is enormous — you can load film-recipe profiles that transform the camera’s output. This is the X100VI’s secret weapon: it produces images that feel filmic with zero editing.

What’s wrong

• Fixed 23mm focal length is polarizing. You’re cropping or foot-zooming. Always.
• No weather sealing unless you attach the (included) adapter ring and filter.
• The lens cap situation is fiddly; many buy a third-party auto-cap.
• Battery life is ~310 shots; carry spares. USB-C charging works.
• Autofocus in low light can hunt — the contrast-detect points aren’t class-leading.
• It was impossible to buy at MSRP for a year. Street prices are still inflated.
• The “TikTok tax” made it uncool to even mention for a while.

The verdict

The X100VI is a camera that makes you want to carry a camera. It’s not the most capable, not the fastest, not the most flexible — but it produces images with character and a shooting experience that no other digital camera matches. If you shoot street, travel, or everyday life and want a fixed-lens companion, it’s the best there is. If you need zoom or fast telephoto, look elsewhere. It deserves the hype — just not the scalper prices.
