NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition
A 32GB GDDR7, 575W monster that doubles 4K ray tracing performance and demands a new power connector and case.
The RTX 5090 Founders Edition is the GPU that makes “4K ray tracing at 120fps” a real, non-marketing statement. It is also a 575W, three-slot, $1,999 graphics card that requires a 1000W PSU, a 12V-2x6 power connector, and a case that can physically fit it. NVIDIA sold you a supercomputer and dared you to power it.
The specs
GB202 silicon, 21,760 CUDA cores (up from 18,432 on the 4090), 170 Tensor cores (5th-gen), 680 RT cores (4th-gen), 32GB GDDR7 across a 512-bit bus at 28 Gbps, and 1,792 GB/s memory bandwidth. Base clock 2.01GHz, boost 2.41GHz. TGP is 575W. Built on TSMC 4NP, a refined 4nm node.
The new DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation is the headline feature: generate up to 3 interpolated frames per rendered frame. On a 5090, Cyberpunk 2077 with full path tracing at 4K goes from ~40fps native to ~240fps with 4x frame gen. Yes, it’s interpolation. Yes, it adds latency. But it’s now indistinguishable from native in most scenarios and game-changing for path-traced titles.
Performance
At 4K native (no DLSS), the 5090 is ~30-35% faster than the 4090 in raster and ~50-70% faster in ray-traced workloads. In productivity (Blender, D5 Render, Stable Diffusion XL), the 32GB VRAM and new Tensor cores deliver 1.7-2x the 4090. The extra VRAM finally makes local LLM inference (70B+ models) comfortable at usable speeds.
The Founders Edition design
NVIDIA’s in-house FE is a three-slot dual-axial cooler with a vapor chamber that exhausts through the fins — not out the backplate. Build quality is immaculate: milled aluminum, no RGB, a structural exoskeleton. It’s 304mm long and 61mm thick (3 slots). It will not fit in a mid-tower without checking clearance. It weighs 2.2 kg — support it.
Power and the connector
The 12V-2x6 connector (the revised, safer spec) supplies 600W. You’ll want an ATX 3.1 PSU rated 1000W minimum. NVIDIA’s power cable is a single native 12V-2x6, addressing the melting-connector saga that plagued the 4090’s adapters. Still: seat the connector fully, hear the click, do not bend it sharply at the strain relief.
What’s wrong
- $1,999 MSRP, street prices higher. It’s the most expensive consumer GPU ever at launch.
- 575W is irresponsible for a consumer product. Your electricity bill will notice.
- 3-slot thickness rules out many cases and all ITX builds.
- DLSS 4 Multi Frame Gen adds latency and is most valuable above 60fps base — don’t expect miracles on a 60fps-locked base.
- Marginal gains over the 4090 at 1440p — this is a 4K/8K card.
- AI and pro market is cannibalizing supply; gamers pay the tax.
The verdict
The RTX 5090 FE is the fastest consumer GPU ever made, full stop. It doubles path-traced 4K performance, gives creators and AI researchers the VRAM they’ve wanted, and costs as much as a whole mid-range gaming PC. If you need it, you know. If you’re wondering if you need it, you don’t — the 5080 or a used 4090 is the sane buy.
